Old Growth Oak Morgans update Sept. 27th 2006

Wednesday, September 27th, 2006

It had been 10 days since the vet has seen WoodRose Katrina, since then I had weaned her down to half of her pain medications. The vet wanted to see what Katrina would be like with no medication on board at all for a 24 hour period. We were both very pleased to see not only was Katrina able to remain stable with only half of her pain medications but that even after 24 hours of no pain medications she was still stable, not to say she was completely comfortable or could be without any pain medications at all but the fact that she could bear weight on her bad foot without pain medications was extremely encouraging.

Katrinas wraps and pads were changed and she was given her pain medications and it was decided to increase the size of her enclosure to give OGO Primavera ToughStuff more running room. They went from a 24 foot square to a 48 long by 24 wide enclosure. If all goes well I will add another 24 feet to the width for a 48 square pen. The next step will be to see if we can wean Katrina from the wraps and pads and see if she can remain stable, if so, Katrina will get to go back into her big pasture area where ToughStuff will be able to really stretch his legs. Its ambitious to look that far down the road but this whole undertaking to attempt to stablize Katrina in her condition was ambitious so my feeling is not to put limitations on what success we might have from moving forward.

ToughStuffs 1/2 brother OGO Primavera BlackGold AKA “Shaman”, will be leaving for his new home in Flagstaff AZ the middle of Oct.

OGO Primavera Black Gold was Sold to Donna DeAmaral of Singing Heart Ranch in Arizona.   Donna will be using Shaman as a herd sire and will be crossing Shaman to Fresian mares for the result of what is called a Moriesian. Donna chose Shaman for his Morgan type, beautiful head and compact body to compliment and improve upon the Fresian.  The Fresian will add height.  Donna’s goal is to create a Sport horse that has the presence of the Fresian, but one that is smaller with a smoother ride and with more longivity.  Shaman will also be used to produce blooded Morgans as well. Anyone who would like to know more about Moriesians please contact Donna at

Old Growth Oak Morgans Update

 OGO Primavera ToughStuff

WoodRose Katrina is providing plenty of milk for OGO Primavera ToughStuff and he has now begun the process of putting on some visable muscle and baby fat.

These pictures show a much chunkier Tough Stuff compared to only a week or two ago.

Everyday Toughie becomes more independant of his mother eating more alfalfa and nibbling on the Senior Equine provided. Katrina is holding her own so far and I hope to enlarge the pen they both are in, in a few weeks if Katrina continues to stay stable to give Toughie more room to run and stretch his legs.
